Tara Workman- Special Education Resource

Welcome to Team Highland...We are all "astronauts", and we are BLASTING OFF INTO LEARNING! Donna Glenn and I are guiding this "rocket", and we are "GEARED UP FOR READING & MATH!"
When I was a little girl, I wanted to grow up and be a teacher. I come from a family of educators. After high school, I started J.S.U., with my major being English Language Arts. EVERY education major must take an “on the surface” special education class. I signed up for the month of May, so I would be quickly finished. The first night, I read almost the entire textbook! I fell in love with every detail of special education!!!!! The next Monday, I changed my major to Collaborative Teacher 6-12. At that time, one could obtain a SPE K-6, by adding two more classes. Of course, I took those two additional classes, so I am certified K-12 in special education. I have been teaching 11 years in Etowah County. I have had hands on experience in K-12
th, working with ALL areas of special education exceptionalities.

In 2013, I got the opportunity to return back to Highland, and this made me very excited! I was previously at Highland for two years. Over the 7years that I wasn’t at Highland, I still kept in touch with many of the staff members. Actually, my husband and I were blessed with a 4 month old angel girl (In 2006) my 2ndyear working at Highland. Mrs. Scott and staff gave me a great baby shower!Awesome memories!

I have been married since 2002, and we have a daughter that attends Southside Elementary. On August 23, 2013, we were blessed with a son that completed our family. My husband is in full time ministry at The Tabernacle Church, as the teens and twenties pastor. I lead praise and worship, and the women’s pastor there. I have an awesome extended family, which also work in ministry.

I believe that education is the most important aspect of a child’s life. EACH child is unique with his or her own style of learning. As a teacher, I focus on the different learning styles of each child. No child should be left out of the learning process. I will be a positive role model, establishing a learning environment that encourages self-worth. Establishing discipline is equally important in the classroom. I use hands-on learning that keeps student involvement at a high level.

Parents play such a HUGE role in motivating students to learn. By simply reviewing sight words, definitions, and concepts, your child will drastically improve EVERY year! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read at least ONE ONE ONE ONE book every night with your child(ren)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My educational motto is….”It’s not what is poured into a student that counts; it’s what is planted!” At church my motto is….”It’s not what is poured into a youth that counts; it’s what is planted!”  Children, youth and young adults KNOW when they are cared for, and we have to work towards planting LIFE-LONG & MEANINGFUL seeds that will grow to be a strong, rooted, oak tree!

I am here for YOU anytime! Please email me at tara_workman@ecboe.org if I can help in any way! Thanks for sharing your child with me!
